A romantic Limousine surprise in Brisbane
Kyle has never been the romantic type – at least not in the grand gesture way. He likes things simple, a chocolate here and there, and the occasional sweet text, and don’t get me wrong, I love it. So when our first wedding anniversary was around the corner, I didn’t expect anything big and he didn’t make a big deal about it either. Like our wedding, we were a low key couple, preferring smaller moments that last a lifetime. On the day though, I got a message from him wishing me a happy anniversary and apologising for not being there to spend the day with me (work), and honestly it was all I needed. I guess as unpretentious as he is when it comes to romance, I am equally as simple; never been one for the big gestures. Until now…
That evening my phone rang and he asked me to wait outside – I was still in my gym clothes – but I went out nonetheless, curious. And then I saw it, rounding the corner, and endless stretch of white metal. My heart skipped a little – I know, what a cliché, but I mean what girl wouldn’t miss heartbeat or two when her husband surprises her with a limousine on their one year anniversary!
Look, I’m not someone who knows a lot about cars, but this bad boy radiated glamour and romance. When he got out, before he even greeted me, I blurted out “What is this?” Typical of his sense of humour, instead of explaining he said “This? This is a Ford LTD Super Stretch. A limousine”. I scoffed at him with a smile on my face. “Come on babe, tonight I show you Brisbane like you haven’t lived here all your life” he said with a cheeky grin.
I asked for a moment to change out of my gym clothes and put on some makeup, but he shook his head saying everything was sorted and asked me trust him. Well, I didn’t marry him for a lack of trust, so I took his hand as he led me to the door and I stepped in. Man, what a sight. It always looks roomy in the movies – especially when teenagers are on the way to a dance sipping on suspicious red cups – but you honestly don’t know just how big it feels until you are inside. Honestly, at first it seems cavernous and you almost don’t know where to sit – or rather sprawl out luxuriously, because there is enough leg room for that.
The interior had leather seats that were comfortable to the max, with neat stitching upping the luxury factor. The limo had three seats in the back and another three seats running perpendicular to them. Just behind the driver, where the divider gave us the ultimate in privacy, another row of seats completed the look. All in all I’d say it could fit more than 9 people, but here the two of us had it ALL to ourselves. I couldn’t help but feel giddy.
I was so taken by the interior that I didn’t notice the gift bag until he picked it up. Inside was a purple dress, just my size with an empire waist – my style down to a T. He knows me too well. He quickly signalled for the driver to go and with the touch of a button rolled up the divider and allowed me to change in private, even turning away shyly. I didn’t even feel like putting on makeup, and my hair was still up in a ponytail, but I felt like I was about to walk a red carpet!
Kyle pulled a bottle of champagne from the mini bar in the limousine – I mean of all things a min bar? I snuck a look inside and saw all the makings of a picnic; strawberries, cream, finger sandwiches, and a packet of Tim Tams.
“So now you’ve got me all dressed up. Where are we going?” I asked him, my curiosity bubbling. “Nah babe, this is a surprise, so you’re just gonna have to be patient.” He smiled, pulled out his iPod, and docked it in the media centre. My favourite song piped through the speakers in the limousine and I sat with his arm around me taking in the Brisbane skyline, noting the Infinity Tower and its cylindrical shape – trying to figure out just where this luxurious ride was headed. Judging by the picnic I knew we weren’t headed for a romantic dinner – what would the point be to rent a limousine for the night if not to spend most of the time in it. As the evening drew on and we rounded bends, passing familiar landmarks, the champagne had me in good spirits. The temperature was perfect, outside it was a hot summer’s evening in Brisbane, but inside it was the perfect mix of chilly and cosy with easy access to the air-conditioning.
Our first stop was a trip down memory lane (forgive the pun) with a stop at the bowling alley on top of Wintergarden. This was where we had our first date, and revisiting this spot just upped the romance as we reminisced about that first night, and my failure at bowling (I may the first woman to strike out with her face). Although we didn’t stay long, the reminder was all we needed to fall in love all over again. As we walked out of Wintergarden, the LED lit interior of the limousine welcomed us back and we prepared for the next stop, whatever it may be.
While we made our way to the second stop, I saw the lights of the Wheel of Brisbane light up the horizon through the tinted windows of the limousine. Honestly I felt like a celebrity touring through Brisbane ensconced in the ultimate luxury vehicle. Our driver was so professional, I have to mention. He never once made me aware of the fact that a stranger was driving the car. I am the type to feel horribly awkward in a cab or Uber – always trying to make small talk and break the awkward silence, but this time, his professionalism made it so easy.
Ever full of surprises, I quickly learned that the picnic goods were just a red herring planted by Kyle. But I knew where we were headed as the landscape gave way to a view of the Brisbane River. You see, one of Kyle and I’s favourite hobbies is looking up restaurants and creating a list of dream meals from these places. At the top of this list was Aria – my gastronomic obsession. My smile stretched my cheeks and I am sure the driver of the limousine could hear my excited squeal even though he was separated from us by the divider.
As we got out at Eagle Street Pier, I naively asked if this was the end of the ride. Kyle just laughed and said “Don’t worry, it’s fancy all the way”. I blushed and suddenly felt as shy as I did when we first met three years ago.
In the restaurant, we were tucked into a private corner. On the table a bunch of roses with a card greeted me with a sentimental message. Just another romantic touch that made my cheeks hurt from smiling. Our little corner had a lovely view over the river with the city stretching out behind it. As we sipped on our wine and chatted, I wondered how on earth I could make this up to him. After all, knowing that we both like the simple things, all I’d gotten him was a journal – he loved to journal. I confessed my guilt and he assured me that this was as much for him as it was for me, and that the real gift was us just spending time together. Honestly, where had I found this man?
We started with an entrée of oysters, because why not? If you’re doing the whole romantic adventure, just go the whole way. For my mains I ordered the duck, as I’d heard marvellous things about it. Kyle went the typical route and ordered up a steak, medium rare. For our sides we decided to stray from the ordinary and tried some oak leaves with a mustard dressing and truffle mash. What can I say? The food was extraordinary, the atmosphere radiated class and I felt like a real princess in my purple dress. We didn’t have dessert – too stuffed from the scrumptious truffle mash. After that we took a stroll along the pier holding hands. The silence with us is always so comfortable; no need to talk because simply being together is enough.
As we reached the parking area, Kyle asked me if I was ready for one more surprise and I was – though I couldn’t imagine what else he may have in store. Back in our luxury ride for the night with my favourite songs filling the interior, I had my head on his shoulder when I saw Stony Bridge coming up. Well that sealed the deal, my inner teenager kicked up and I asked if we were headed for Kangaroo Cliffs? He just smiled and gave me a kiss. I settled back in as we crossed the bridge, feeling all dopey and loved up – like a teenager on a first date. Honestly the night had filled with me so many happy feelings, I wondered if there were any left for the next stop.
I was right of course, we stopped at Kangaroo Cliffs. Kyle asked me stay in the limousine for a few minutes and I obliged. All the champagne, wine and food had me feeling sleepy and didn’t help that the limousine was the perfect temperature with huge seats just begging for a nap. I decided to do some more snooping in the interior. The mini bar was suddenly empty, except for a few bottles of water and I wondered where the snacks had gone? I also played with the divider like a kid who just discovered electric car windows, because deep down we are all four years old, right? When the door opened, Kyle popped in his head with a smile and said “Ready?” I nodded and scooted the door. As I stepped out the scene that met me had me tearing up. He had set up a picnic (I was right all along!!) and surrounding the bright red blanket on the ground were small tea light candles surrounding the scene and pillows for us to sit on.
Our driver, ever the professional discreetly retreated back to the limousine without a sound. However, the door was left open allowing the music to float out into the night and put the final touch on the evening. It always astounds me to see the cliffs lit up at night while the river and Brisbane glittered ahead of us. Honestly, though I had been here for so many barbecues and events, this time it felt like it had been carved for just the two of us. I didn’t even notice the night owl photographers walking past or the occasional jogger. I was wrapped up in a world of my own, with my own prince charming on my arm. We were still stuffed from dinner, so most of the picnic went uneaten, but we did sneak a Tim Tam (I know, I know – without coffee or tea!?) As the night drew to a close, I offered to help clean up, but Kyle insisted I relax in the limousine. This time I did take advantage of those long seats and lay down. When next I woke up, I was wrapped up in the red picnic blanket with a smiling Kyle telling me that we are home. I didn’t even notice a bump on the way and slept through it all, exhausted from being swept off my feet.
What a night we had, two non-romantics out on the town, getting by in one of the most romantic rides. All this after the first year of marriage? Well I can’t wait to see what the next 50 has in store, though Kyle has set the bar incredibly high on this one.
